Population Age Structures in Switzerland from a Sub-Country Perspective

Jean-Marie Le Goff , University of Lausanne

Our communication focuses on analyzing the age structure of Switzerland's 2,131 municipalities in 2024. Our goal is to construct a typology of age pyramids to identify regional differences in the population distribution by age. Our investigations lead us to describe seven clusters showing distributions between large cities (Lausanne, Basel, Zurich) and their suburbs, as well as between mountain regions and plateau regions. In addition, the different linguistic regions stand out, with age structures for municipalities in the cantons of Vaud and Geneva differing from the rest of Switzerland. Similarly, Italian-speaking Switzerland is characterized by a significant aging of its population. Our future work will focus on analyzing the demographic dynamics specific to each of these clusters.
